Big Twist Value yarn review: the yarn that got me hooked
Big Twist holds a special place for me. In my own words: "this was the first yarn I had ever used and absolutely fell in love with it! I've made things like a plush dragon, a cover-up skirt, and other plushies. It is a very durable yarn." Big Twist is now sold at Michaels stores and on michaels.com, so here's a fresh look at it, backed up by what other crocheters report. This review focuses on Big Twist Value, the everyday worsted. It was Big Twist Value I started with.
Where to buy it
Michaels carries Big Twist in stores and online in the U.S. and Canada. Michaels announced the launch on Oct 31, 2025, and bigtwistco.com now redirects to Michaels. When I searched michaels.com on Oct 23, 2026, these Big Twist lines came up:
- Value (solids), Value Ombre and Value Pound+
- Living, Posh, Plush and Baby Bear
- Twinkle
- Winter Worsted Stripes, Winter Bulky Stripes and Winter Super Bulky Stripes & Sparkles
- Several multipacks
Fiber and weight (Big Twist Value)
- Fiber: 100% acrylic
- Weight: Medium (4) worsted
- Skein: 6 oz / 170 g, 380 yd / 347 m. Ravelry notes that an older put-up was 371 yd.
- Hook and gauge: H-8 (5 mm); 13 sc × 14 rows = 4 in
- Made in: India, according to Ravelry
Price and yardage (as of Oct 23, 2026)
| Where | Price shown | Per ounce | Per 100 yd |
|---|---|---|---|
| Michaels (michaels.com) | $3.74 sale (Reg. $4.99) | $0.62 sale / $0.83 regular | $0.98 sale / $1.31 regular |
Prices may vary by store. As of Oct 23, 2026, Value Pound+ showed $9.74 sale (Reg. $12.99). I couldn't confirm its yardage, so I haven't worked out a per-yard price for it.
Feel, softness and splitting
In my hands it feels soft yet durable, and it didn't split on me.
What other crocheters report:
- A dependable basic. In a July 2025 r/Brochet thread, one crocheter called it a "serviceable basic acrylic" that's "not quite as rough as" Red Heart Super Saver. Another said it's "much softer" than Super Saver, and a third recommended it for tapestry work.
- Not everyone agrees. In the same thread, one crocheter said it "constantly splits," and another found it "very similar" to Super Saver and on the rough side until it's washed.
- Some say it changed. In 2023, crocheters on r/crochet and r/YarnAddicts reported a change to a rougher, looser twist that split more. Michaels and Big Twist haven't confirmed any change.
Washability and care
Label care: Ravelry's listing gives the care as "Machine Wash, Dry Flat," and the product description calls it machine washable.
What other crocheters report (their experiences, not mine):
- In r/Brochet, one crocheter said it "washes fine."
- Another said it "fuzzes up a bit in the wash."
- A third found it feels better once it's washed.
Colors
Ravelry lists 96 colorways for Big Twist Value, though that count includes retired shades, so it isn't what's on the shelf today. My dragon was a double strand of Black and Inclusivity, and my skirts used Lilac, Hot Pink, Grape, Teal and Sapphire. I don't have a favorite color, because I love them all!
Best projects
Plushies and amigurumi, which is where I've loved it most, plus wearables like my cover-up skirt. Other crocheters use it for blankets and tapestry crochet.
Closest name-brand comparison
Red Heart Super Saver, which crocheters compare it to most. On michaels.com (as of Oct 23, 2026), Super Saver showed $4.12 sale (Reg. $5.49) for 7 oz / 364 yd, which is $1.13 sale / $1.51 regular per 100 yd. Big Twist Value works out to $0.98 / $1.31 per 100 yd, a bit cheaper per yard. Crocheters are split on which one is softer.
Ratings
- Ravelry: 4.2 out of 5 from 2,078 votes, with 29,457 projects (Oct 23, 2026)
- Michaels: michaels.com shows about 4.6 out of 5 from 1,762 reviews (as of Oct 23, 2026).
My verdict
Big Twist Value is the yarn that made me fall in love with crochet, and it's a durable, budget-friendly worsted that's perfect for plushies and everyday projects. At under a dollar per 100 yards on sale at Michaels, it's an easy place to start.
Happy hooking,
Kimberly from Skeinstead
