Loops & Threads Petite Purl review: a super-soft skinny chenille for wearables
Petite Purl is one of my favorite yarns for things you actually wear. In my own words: "it is very soft and great for making wearable items. I've made a hooded scarf, fingerless gloves, and a sweater with this yarn. Again, it is so soft!" Below is what I've found, plus what other crocheters report so you get the full picture.
What it is
Petite Purl is a Loops & Threads yarn, which is Michaels' own house brand. It's sold at Michaels stores and on michaels.com (item 10750795). It's a thin, velvety chenille. Michaels' description (as copied on Ravelry) says it's thinner than its Sweet Snuggles Lite and Chenille Home Slim yarns.

How it feels and works up
For me, the big story is softness. It is so soft, and that's why I keep reaching for it for scarves, gloves and sweaters that sit right against your skin.
It didn't split on me at all. I worked it with a 6 mm hook, which is bigger than the 4.5 mm on the label.
Here's what other crocheters report:
- Soft, and good for small plushies too. One crocheter on Reddit loves it for small plushies and wishes it came in more colors. One Ribblr member said "Petite Purl is awesome!" and that "it doesn't shed at all!"
- The skein can tangle. This is the complaint I saw most. A November 2025 r/crochet post showed a center-pull skein that turned into a tangle in the middle. Commenters called the skeins "so soft but such a mess," and some now pull from the outside or rewind before they start.
- Texture can vary. A Ribblr member said a new skein in white came out "sparse" and "matted" compared with the light blue they loved. Another replied that the textures "vary drastically."
- It's close to Skinny Chenille. Crocheters who own both Loops & Threads Skinny Chenille and Petite Purl say they look very similar in weight and appearance, even though the labels suggest different hooks. Swatch before you mix them.
Washability and care
Label care: Ravelry's listing, which copies Michaels' product details, marks Petite Purl as machine washable. It doesn't give a temperature or drying method. One crocheter on Reddit says their label reads "machine wash, dry flat." Check the label on your skein.
What other crocheters report (their experiences, not mine):
- One crocheter in r/Yarn tested swatches on a warm, gentle wash and low dry and said they stayed soft. They warned that too much heat can damage chenille.
- A commenter in r/YarnAddicts said it holds up for the first few washes, but after about 5–6 cycles it starts to feel "slightly scratchy." They'd use it for decorative or adult items, and swatch-test it before making anything for a baby.
- The person who started the r/Yarn thread found that handling and gentle hand washing made their chenille pieces less soft over time.
If you're making something that will be washed often, washing a test swatch first is a good idea.
Colors
Ravelry lists 17 colorways, including Winter White, Black, Cappuccino, Forest Green, Jadeite, Mauve, Navy Blue, Rhubarb and Tan. That isn't a confirmed count of what's on Michaels' shelves today. Some crocheters wish it came in more colors. I used purple.
Best projects
Wearables are where it shines for me. I've made a hooded scarf, fingerless gloves and a sweater with it. With 537 yards per skein, a scarf or a pair of gloves doesn't take many skeins. My sweater took about 3 skeins. Michaels also suggests cardigans, vests, hats and amigurumi, and other crocheters like it for small plushies.
Closest name-brand comparison
Bernat Future Hope is the closest on paper. It's also a #4 chenille, with a 5 mm hook, a crochet gauge of 14 sc × 16 rows, and 333 yd in a 6 oz skein of recycled polyester. At its $11.99 list price on Yarnspirations (checked Oct 22, 2026), it works out to about $2.00 per ounce and $3.60 per 100 yd. So Petite Purl costs about half as much per yard, even at Michaels' regular price.
What reviewers say, in numbers
- Ravelry: rated 4.2 out of 5 from 50 votes, with 571 projects logged (as of Oct 23, 2026).
- Michaels: the michaels.com listing shows an average of about 4.6 out of 5 from 810 reviews (as of Oct 23, 2026).
My verdict
If you want a really soft chenille for scarves, gloves and sweaters, Petite Purl is one of the best values per yard around. Pull from the outside of the skein, buy enough of one dye lot, and test-wash a swatch before you make anything that gets washed often.
Happy hooking,
Kimberly from Skeinstead
